Black starts the attack on White's group on the upper edge with strengthening his own shape in the corner, in sente.
:
Black saves his single stone on the upper edge, and simultaneously secures a large amount of territory in the top left corner. White's group on the upper edge is now in danger to become reduced to only one eye.
:
White, however, does not want to secure life for her group, e.g. with a move at . She knows that she will probably be behind in territory, after Black lives on the right side, with a move at , and she captures Black's stones on the left edge, with a move at . This would be similar to the previous sub-variation; but here, White has does not have the large endgame move in the upper left corner any more. So, White simply pre-empts two eyes for Black's top right group.
:
White's group is now reduced to one eye.
:
White, in return, takes Black's remaining potential eye. We now have "me ari me nashi", so White will win the semeai.
However, even if Black also had got an eye, he would lose. His group in the top right has an insufficient amount of outside liberties (), so Black will suffer from the Punishment Semeai, when he tries to approach White's group from the inside.
