White's push at the left edge does not have any effect on the territorial balance of the game, as it is played within the Main Semeai Area.

:
Black blocks, as a matter of course.

:
KataGo likes continuing with the Main Semeai here.

White would have been better in the Semeai Variation, if she had played e.g. at , instead.

:
Black takes the opportunity to establish an additional point of territory in the upper left centre.

:
White peeps, as in the superordinate variation.

Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the upper left corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured an additional White stone at the left edge, so gaining one point.

In total, White lost two points.

Black + 4 => Black + 6
