VAR (.3) (.3)

Black captures White's two stones in the lower left.

:
White pushes once more into Black's lower left corner.

:
Black has to capture White's single stone to the right.

: ( 152 58co)
White plays KataGo's bad-shape move in the left centre.

However, it would be better for her to connect at in the right centre instead, stopping Black from capturing this stone with his next move (see subvariation below).

: ( 152 58cp)
Black answers with KataGo's solid connection in the left centre.

However, he would gain one point overall, if the captured White's single stone in the right centre, instead.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black captured one White stone more in the lower left corner, so gaining one point.
  • White captured one Black stone more in the upper right corner, so gaining one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
