White pushes at the lower edge, threatening to connect her single stone.

:
Black captures White's stone at the second line, as a matter of course.

:
After Black's tenuki, White continues with the reduction of Black's upper left corner.

:
Black connects in the corner immediately.

Inserting the kikashi of , would be possible, and not affect the final scores of the game.

:
White plays a kikashi of her own in the centre, stopping Black from getting one point of territory in that area.

:
With this connection, White terminates the sequence in the upper left corner.

:
Black must capture White's single stone in the right centre.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai for a while, ...

:
... before inserting her remaining kikashi at the bottom and in the centre.

Please note that this move does not hurt White's options for reducing Black's corner from the left.

:
Black connects.

Defending his lower left corner with or , instead, would benefit White by two points in the Semeai Variation, while not affecting the overall result of the game. Thereafter, White would give atari at , forcing Black to capture with .
White would have made profit outside the Main Semeai area, instead of inside with pushing into Black's territory from the left.

White needed five moves () to close all the holes in the borders of her territories at the top and in the upper right corner.

Black needed also five moves () to stop White from destroying any point of his potential territories at the left side of the board.

Please note that Black is only one over par, related to the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, so he would be unable to connect his single stone in the lower right (which would cost him two tempi in the Main Semeai).

With her moves at , White would be able to destroy seven points of Black's potential territory at the let side of the board.

Black would be able to destroy five points of White's potential territory in the upper right with his moves at .
In addition, in the case White played some of her territory-destroying moves first, Black would be able to connect his single stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
Black's total gain at the right side of the board would be also seven points, as large as White's gain at the left.

After both sides played all of their destructive moves, Black would still own one surplus Main Semeai Liberty. However, there would no longer be an open spot on the board where Black could spend this surplus liberty for.

White chooses a "peaceful" continuation, following the course of the mutual occupation of opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai.

As explained above, the final scores of the game would not be affected, if White started with the mutual destruction of opponent's territories, instead.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured three White stones less in the left centre, so losing five points.
  • White capture two Black stones less in the upper right corner, so losing two points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 1 => Jigo
