Defending at the top was our first idea.

However, as we found later, blocking at at the upper edge would have been one point better overall.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the top is three points.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's single stone in the right centre, so losing two points.
  • Black did not destroy three points of White's territory in the upper right.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining one point.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the top is three points.
  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured three White stones less in the left centre, so losing five points.
  • White captured three Black stones less in the upper right, so losing three points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost five points.

White + 1 => Black + 4
