KataGo's 2021 Solution

VAR (.3) (.4)

White gives atari at Black's three stones in the upper right corner.

However, even the newest KataGo net from end of July 2021 does not "see" the correct continuation.

:
Black has to connect, as a matter of course.

:
White forces once in the left centre, stopping Black from establishing any additional point of territory there.

:
Black has to defend his potential territory in that area.

Thereafter, ...

White needed five moves () to close all of her open spots in the borders of her potential territories in the upper right.
Please note that Black has only one Main Semeai Liberty to spend, so it is not necessary to also defend at .

Black needed also five moves () to cover all of his weaknesses in the borders of his potential territories at the left.

The position is balanced, so it is not necessary for White to overdo it.

:
White simply continues with the Main Semeai, not trying too hard.

: (148 58dp)
Black follows White with the mutual occupation of opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai.

It will not help Black to start with the reductions of opponent's territory, instead.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured three White stones less in the left centre, so losing five points.
  • White captured two Black stones less in the upper right corner, so losing two points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 1 => Jigo
