Black's tenuki, in order to capture White's single stone in the upper right, is KataGo's favoured suggestion.

However, answering with the solid connection at would have been better. The overall result of the game would not be affected, but Black could decrease White's score in the Semeai Variation, as he took profit outside the Main Semeai area.

  • Black captured White's stone in the upper right, so gaining two points.
  • White captured three Black stones less at the right, losing six points.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the lower left corner.

In total, Black lost two points.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is ten points.
  • White got an additional three points of territory at the top.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is four points.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black destroyed an additional six points of White's territory in the upper right.
  • Black captured four White stones more at the left, so gaining seven points.
  • White captured seven Black stones more at the right, so gaining twelve points.

In total, Black lost thirteen points.
