White plays KataGo's immediate crosscut, but which is a grave mistake here.

Black plays the atari from the inside, following KataGo's sequence without thinking as White did just before.

Black must punish White for her previous mistake by giving atari at White's pivotal stone from the outside, instead.

In the Capture Variation, the sequence of , , , will be played after the dissolving of the hanezeki.

There is no need to play these moves in the Semeai Variation. Nevertheless, adding these would not make a difference.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the top is one point.

In total, White gained three points.

Jigo => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the top is one point.

In total, White gained three points.

Black + 3 => Jigo
