After this surprising move at the 1-2-point, there is nothing left that White could do in this corner.

White blocks at the top by giving atari.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • In the upper left corner, Black got an additional four White stones, but had to occupy four points of his own territory, so the net effect is zero.
  • At the top, one point of White's territory switched place, so the net effect is zero, too.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • In the upper left corner, Black got an additional four White stones, but had to occupy four points of his own territory, so the net effect is zero.
