Continuing with the Main Semeai, e.g. with , would benefit Black in the Semeai Variation, while not affecting the overall result of the game.

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • In the upper left corner, both sides had not put four stones each into Black's territory, so the net effect is zero.
  • At the top, one point of White's territory changed place, so the net effect is zero.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
