Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A)

: ( 222iz)
Black blocks in the corner.

:
White gives atari at the left edge.

:
Black connects solidly.

Giving counter-atari at , instead, is useless, because Black will be unable to win the ensuing ko fight after White captured with .

:
White connects her single stone, dividing Black into two.

:
Black immobilises White's stones in the upper left corner.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai, occupying the guzumi point at the right.

:
Black takes a liberty of White's group at the left.

In principle, he would be able to capture White's stones in the upper left corner with a move at . But in would cost him two moves outside the Main Semeai to fulfil his aim, and so his group at the right would fall prey to the Punishment Semeai.

:
White must not connect her two stones, so losing two tempi in the Main Semeai. Otherwise, Black would be able to give atari at in the upper left corner, capturing White's stones there.

Black will have to play at , turning the position in the upper left corner into a partial seki.
Instead of destroying one point of White's territory in the upper right, Black will play hane at at the upper edge, and connect at thereafter. This will enhance his score in the Semeai Variation (but which is irrelevant here).

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black gained an additional six points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the upper left, so losing one point.
  • White got an additional three points of territory at the top.

In total, Black gained three points.

White + 17 => White + 14
