Alternatively, she could do without this move and let Black occupy that point. The final scores of the game will remain unaffected.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone there.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the upoer right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 3 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone there.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.
  • Black captured one White stone more in the upper left, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost three points.
