Black captures White's five stones in the upper left, But it will turn out that he was much too greedy.

Playing immediately at , instead, occupying one of Black's Main Semeai Liberties, will lead to a similar result.
However, White must not mistakenly block at . This move would lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, enabling Black to continue this fight with White's group at the left, eventually winning the game.

Black cannot win the semeai with White's group at the left (after he connected at ), so he sets his hopes on a fight with White's centre group.
