Black gives atari at White's two stones in the centre.

:
White must connect.

:
Black connects also, ending in gote.
Please note that Black lost his potential eye in the left centre.

:
White captures the nakade.

White's push into Black's lower left corner is favoured by KataGo.

However, White would be better in the Semeai Variation, if she simply continued with the Main Semeai.

:
In principle, Black plays 2/2 reductions.
Taking profit outside the Main Semeai area will benefit him in the Semeai Variation.

In the Capture Variation, Black will have to take White's -stones off the board, if he does not want to let White turn his lower left corner into a seki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured an additional three White stones in the lower left corner, so gaining three points.
  • White destroyed five points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 4 => White + 4

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory in the left centre.
  • Black got an additional three White stones in the lower left corner, so gaining three points.
  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black captured an additional White stone there, so gaining two points.

In total, Black gained five points.

Black + 5 => Black + 10
