Immediately connecting at at the lower edge, instead, would be a grave mistake. White would lose two points overall.

Black is bound to follow the Main Semeai, and so gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

After having fixed the shapes in some other parts of the board, White connects her two stones at the lower edge.

Alternatively, she could erase her weakness in the upper right corner first, with a move at .

For demonstrative purposes, we will show here that and are miai, as far as the overall result of the game is concerned.
Concluding, it would have been better for Black to connect at , as this move would result in a drawn game in the Semeai Variation.

It does not make sense here to start a ko fight with , instead.

Black lost one tempo in the Main Semeai in the upper right, so he hast to continue with occupying White's liberties at the left.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will play the hane of at the upper edge, and connect at thereafter.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the right centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 6 => White + 6

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.
  • White captured an additional two Black stones in the upper right, so gaining four points.

In total, White gained three points.
