White connects her two stones in the lower left.

The continuation here is not as clear cut as "simply" following the path of the Main Semeai. Both sides must be on their guard not to fall into a sudden trap.

:
White lost two tempi in the Main Semeai by her previous move, so Black is able to give atari in the upper left corner.

:
Black has to capture White's single stone in the upper right.

Blocking at , instead, would be one point worse overall.

:
White could also do without this push that costs her one tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Blocking at at the upper edge, instead, will be mistaken. White would lose one point overall.

:
In principle, Black plays 2/2 reductions.
Taking profit outside the Main Semeai area will benefit him in the Semeai Variation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • Black captured White's single stone in the upper right, so gaining two points.
  • White lost two points of territory in the upper right.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 2 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the left centre is two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.
  • White did not get one point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured an additional two Black stones at the right, so gaining three points.

In total, White lost three points.

Jigo => Black + 3
