Let's compare the result of this variation with the result of the Capture Variation of our solution (diagram below). Black has taken four White stones with (= ), captured 25 -stones, and got eleven points of territory (), for a total of 65 points. White has secured one point of territory (). |
///: In the Capture Variation of our solution, Black has captured 32 stones (), for a total of 64 points. The stones which have been captured at the points marked with (four stones each), cancel each other out. Compared to the Capture Variation of our solution, White has gained nothing, so Black wins by five points here also. However, choosing the Semeai Variation would have been two points better for White. |
///: It seems to us that after Black has secured his top left corner with the move at in our solution, there will be no subsequent ko-fight. So, it will probably be technically correct to play the forcing moves in the hanezeki as early as with , and . At least, the calculation above would be simplified, because White cannot afford to capture the hanezeki's tail so early. | |
