Black could live, and cut his territorial losses in the corner, by playing the tesuji of now, and therewith avoid the disaster shown above. But this will not make up for his initial mistake with .

Black loses fourteen points locally, compared to the correct sequence (, , are not points for Black any more, and Black hasn't captured a White stone; are additional points for White).

However, Black ends in sente, so he can pre-empt White's endgame in the lower left.

Black secures three points of territory (), and White does not capture one Black stone (). So Black gains five points in the lower left.

However, this cannot compensate for his loss in the upper left corner. Black wins the Semeai Variation of our solution with three points, so White is ahead here by 14 - 3 - 5 = 6 points.
