Variations of Our Solution (III)

VAR

: ( 503)
KataGo preferred playing the crosscut of immediately after the tsuke of Yamada Shinji to drawing-back with a move at (and crosscut one move later).
On the other hand, this crosscut might be standard endgame repertoire that we amateurs were absolutely not aware of.

:
Black answers with the inside atari of .

Black might want to answer more forcefully, with the outside atari at , but he will not get a better result. Please refer to Volume II for details ( 1093e)
Black is handicapped by the fact that he must be on his guard to not lose even one liberty in the Main Semeai. This would happen however, if Black ever needed an approach-move before being able to occupy both of White's marked liberties in the top left corner.

:
The same is true for answering White's atari of by capturing at .

:
Protecting the upper left corner, with the block at , and defending the territory in the lower left corner, by blocking at , are miai.

:
As usual, Black ignores White atari of , to gain on the upper side.

:
White continues with the "usual" sequence of the Main Semeai.

:
The connection of loses one move therein, but this loss does not matter in the Semeai Variation. Black must not use his just won liberty to play the forcing exchange of , , as there is no White territory to be destroyed in the Semeai Variation. Quite contrary, this exchange would be an outright loss of one point for Black.

The final score of the Capture Variation would enhance by one point in Black's favour (from Black + 2 to Black + 3), but is remains White's choice between both Main Variations.

In comparison with Our Solution (2015) ...

  • Black lost two points of territory in the upper left corner ),
  • White gained two points of territory in this area ), but ...
  • Black destroyed one point of White territory ().
In total, White is three points better than before, so the Capture Variation will now become a

Draw (jigo)

White's scores and losses are located outside the Main Semeai area, so result of the Semeai Variation is

Black + 2
