Variations of Our Solution (III)

VAR

: ( 509)
White continues on the right side.

:
Black now takes the point that White should have taken before, and a ko arises on the left side.

:
White cannot play at , instead. Black will continue with taking White's last outside liberty, at , and White's group is caught in a shortage of liberties.

:
White must end the ko now. She has no effective ko-threats, but Black an absolute one at .

The situation - with Black's group in the top right, and White's group on the left side, living - is similar to the Capture Variation of our solution that Black wins by five points.

Here, Black captured six stones in the upper right () for a gain of 12 points; White lost two points of territory () there. On the left side, White will not get six (= 1 + 4 + 1) additional prisoners that Black otherwise would have sacrificed during the further filling of the nakade. In our solution, dissolving the hanezeki costs White 26 points. So we get for the score (from Black's point of view):
5 + 12 + 2 + 6 - 26 = -1.

White wins this sub-variation by one point.

However, her fate depends on the size of Black's ko-threat, so we prefer an unconditional sequence for our solution. If White had not played the endgame on the left side "early", Black would have two absolute ko-threats inside the seki in the lower right corner, so White could not play this way successfully.
