White utilises the wedge in the right centre as a ko threat.

We will assume here that White insists on winning the ko fight in the upper left corner.

White recaptures the ko.

Black gives White what she wants, and continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White connects the ko.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured an additional Black stone in the upper left, so gaining one point.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 2 => Jigo

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured two White stones more in the upper left, but had lost one of his stones in this area, so the net effect is a gain of three points for him.
  • White captured two Black stones more at the right, so gaining three points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other

Black + 2 => Black + 2
