Please note that White does not have any means here to compensate for this loss of territory (in the Capture Variation), quite contrary to the comparable position with White's last ko threat in the upper left played inside the corner (at ; 648qr).

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone in that area.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not capture White's stone in the upper right, so losing three points in total.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone in that area.
  • White captures one Black stone less at the upper edge, so losing one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured one Black stone more in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 1 => Black + 1
