Variations of the Professional Solution

VARP (.1)

: ( 0730caa)
White dispenses with playing her kikashi at until the hanezeki's tail has been captured, and also occupies opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai only.

///

:
This is the last moment that White can play "her" kikashi in the bamboo joint at successfully (i.e. reaching a drawn game).

:
White captures the hanezeki's tail.

White might also choose the Semeai Variation, e.g. by playing at , instead, also reaching a final score of "Black + 3".

: (145: 0730cac; A: 0730cad)
White takes a decisive liberty of Black's large group at the top right, bringing it below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level. Despite this deadly threat, there are too many open spots on the board remaining that White cannot close simultaneously; therefore she will lose the game.

White might consider playing her kikashi at "late", instead, but she should not try the oki at , as this would lose her one point.

:
Black must play Michael Redmond's kikashi now, as he badly needs an additional liberty.

:
If played at , instead, it will result a change in the order of moves with one of the subvariations mentioned above.

:
Black must not connect, otherwise he will fall prey to the Punishment Semeai.

:
If played at , instead, it will result a change in the order of moves with one of the subvariations mentioned above.

:
Black secures an additional three points of territory in the lower right corner, which win him the game.

The left side of the board is identical to the Professional Solution.

The comparison of the final positions in the right half of the board (Professional Solution at the left) shows:

  • White did not capture one Black stone at the bottom (), losing one point of territory.
  • White got her point of territory in the centre ().
  • Black got three points of territory at the bottom (), due to White's missing oki.

In total, Black gained three points of territory, compared with the Professional Solution.

Black wins by three points.
