About Hanezeki (2009; 2015)

Three White Groups That Give Atari

The key difference is that White's -group, which gives atari to Black's hane-group (), is split into three ().

Each of these three groups must get life, if White wants to avoid having to capture the -group. The -group looks very weak, and it will be unable to get two eyes. White's only hope is to roll up the hanezeki from the other side, by capturing the -group, and so saving the upper part of her -group.

But, simultaneously, she has to overcome Black's big territorial lead in the process.

There are two further important, and inter-related, aspects that are different in this problem:

The two -chains share two liberties, and not one. This means that the hane-group () needs to get more than one external liberty before it can consider capturing the three White -stones, without risk.

There is more than one -stone. Now, after White captured , Black recaptured, and White played oki, the Black -group has one extra approach-move liberty. This means that it is safe for the -group to share an extra liberty with the -group.
