Timing of the Guzumi (2022)

VAR

: ( 1814)
White extends from her four-stone group into the centre of the lower side, enhancing her formation above, while also frustrating Black from wandering with the hanezeki's tail.

It is quite easy to see (for humans) that , (played at any time) would revert to the position two moves later, which KataGo considered undoubtedly favourable for White.

We inserted this move manually.

:
Black has to capture White's single stone in the upper right, securing independent life for his large group.

The ensuing sequence follows KataGo's suggestion at a komi of -1.5.

:
White makes sure that her stones at the left cannot be captured easily.

:
Black starts saving his nakade stones.

:
White continues at the upper edge, capturing Black's single stone there.

:
Black blocks his upper left corner.

:
White blocks the top in return.

:
Black defends his territory in the lower left corner in good shape.

Ko:

:
White's hane at the left edge prepares for the reduction of Black's corner territory.

:
Black's immediate block leaves room for a ko-fight in this area.

:
Another one of KataGo's surprising moves inside Black's upper left corner.

:
White's atari starts the above-mentioned ko-fight.

:
Black captures White's earlier played kikashi-stone, threatening to proceed into White's potential territory at the top.

:
White plays another kikashi of her own, strengthening her formation at the left a bit, ...

:
... before recapturing the ko, ignoring Black's ko-threat.

:
Apparently, KataGo assesses Black's formation in the upper left corner quite weak, as it chooses a protective move for Black now.

:
White captures another Black stone at the left edge, further threatening Black's upper left corner.

:
Black defends passively for another time.

:
White's attachment in the left centre threatens to capture Black's two stones to the left.

:
Finally, White secures her territory at the top, in principle anwering Black's ko-threat there "late".

:
Black destroys some points of potential White territory in the upper left centre.

:
White returns the favour in the upper left corner.

:
White pulls her single stone in atari out, in sente.

:
White's atari in the Guzumi Area could be played at any time, in principle.

:
Black pulls out his single stone in the centre, turning White's potential territory there into kind of no-mans land.

:
White securely connects her stones to the left.

:
The entire lower left centre has become no-mans land.

:
Black starts the reduction of White's potential territory in the centre from every available direction.

:
The small endgame continues.

Black:

  • Eleven points in the upper left corner.
