New Story Line 2022

Prof. Jeong SooHyun's Advice

to Start the Endgame Early

VAR

: ( 2043c)
White must draw back, as in the "classical" line of play after Yamada Shinji's Tsuke, due to the presence of Black's two stones.

Black will win the game by two points hereafter.

You may wonder why it won't be a three-point win, as in Our 2015 Solution. Well, KataGo has a surprise in store in the bottom left corner!

:
Black inserts his kikashi in the hanezeki, ...

:
... before continuing with the hane at the upper edge.

:
White cuts.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones above, ...

:
... before immobilising White's cutting stone.

:
Here, KataGo captures the nakade "early".

:
First, the endgame starts in the lower left corner as usual.

:
But not, KataGo takes the opportunity to play this surprising extension inside Black's corner.

:
Black is forced to answer submissively at the lower edge.

:
White plays atari around the nakade again, but this time from inside Black's corner.

:
Black must capture.

:
White further spoils Black's shape, ...

:
... before answering Black's earlier tenuki to the upper left.

:
KataGo's Wedge in the left centre.

:
KataGo's Bad-Shape Move in the left centre.

:
Black answers with KataGo's Solid Connection.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White's push into Black's potential territory does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, as it creates an approach-move liberty for her left hand group.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

:
Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is six points.
  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory at the top.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is seven points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 2 => Black + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is six points.
  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory at the top.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is six points.
  • Black captured two White stones more at the left side, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost four points.

Jigo => Black + 4
