Black occupies a liberty of White's four stones above, while trying to connect his troops.

White cuts on the outside, also giving atari at Black's single stone.

Alternatively, White might play the sequence in the corner before, changing the order of moves.

Black connects on the outside.

Alternatively, he might play hane at the upper edge, sacrificing another stone on the top. The final scores of the game will remain unaffected.

  • White got an additional point of territory in the right centre.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.

In total, White gained eight points.

White + 2 => White + 10

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation, ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is six points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the top is three points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the right centre, so losing one point.
  • White captured one Black stone more in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained ten points.

Black + 4 => White + 6
