White occupies a liberty of Black's group at the right.

Please note that providing White's centre group with a second eye is the most straightforward way of play here, killing Black's option for the Central Semeai from the very beginning.

Occupying any other liberty of Black's group would fulfil this task, too. If Black insisted on starting the Central Semeai thereafter, he would lose it by just one move.

:
Black plays the solid connection in the left centre.

Connecting at in the lower left corner, instead, would not affect the final scores of the game.

:
White reduces the liberties of Black's two stones below.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

:
Black must play a protective move before approaching White's left-hand group from below.

If he did without, White would play the placement of after and , threatening a double-snap back at or .

Black plays 1/1 reduction.

Taking profit outside the Main Semeai area benefits Black in the Semeai Variation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not capture White's stone in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is three points.
  • Black captured White's stone in the right centre, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not capture White's stone in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is three points.
  • The net effect of the different play in the upper right is zero.

In total, White lost three points.

Black + 7 => Black + 10
