Variations of Our Solution (Ib)

KataGo's 2021 Solution

VAR (.3) (.3)

: ( 58ct)
White should play the wedge in the right centre, threatening to connect her single stone there.

:
Black has to immobilise White's single stone.

:
Thereafter, White occupies another liberty of Black's group at the right.

Compared to the superordinate variation, Black lost one point of territory in the left centre (in the Capture Variation).
He did not lose any tempo in the Main Semeai, but he will be unable to benefit from this gain - as we will see below.

In order to defend his potential territory at the left side of the board, Black needed five moves ().

White needed four moves () to accomplish the same task at the right side of the board.
Please note that she already play a protective move in the upper right corner.

It's Black's turn, so all defensive moves can be played in order.

Please note that Black must not connect his stone in the lower right, as this would lose two tempi in the Main Semeai - but he has only one to spend.

White has five territory-destroying moves at the left side of the board (), all gaining one point (in the Capture Variation).

Black would be able to destroy four points of White's territory in the upper right, and has the connection of in the lower right, which is worth two points.

This implies that White must never start the mutual reduction of opponent's territory.
If she did, Black would be able to connect , so gaining one point overall.

:
Just for demonstrative purposes, we let Black destroy one point of White's territory in the upper right.

Please note that Black lost one tempo in the Main Semeai by this move, and is par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level thereafter.

:
Black is bound to follow White with the Main Semeai, mutually occupying opponent's liberties.

:
White plays her territory-destroying move at the latest moment possible.

She lost one tempo by this move, but there is nothing left Black could do, as all borders of White's territory in the upper right are already closed.

Black plays 0/1 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right centre.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the right centre.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black captured one White stone more in the lower left corner, so gaining one point.
  • The stone that White captured in the upper right has only changed place, so the net effect is zero.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 1 => Jigo
