Black's descent to the upper edge was my first idea, as this move is advantageous in several other lines.

Here, however, it would be better for Black to defend his formation in the left centre, with a move at , instead.

White's push at the left edge could also be played later, after Black added some defensive move in the corner.

Black must not play any reduction.

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not capture a White stone in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the right centre.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not capture a White stone in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the right centre.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the right centre, so losing two points.

In total, Black gained one point.
