KataGo's 2021 Solution

VAR (.3) (.4)

White pushes into Black's lower left corner.

:
Black ignores White's previous move, in order to reduce White's territory at the top.

:
White pushes once more, this time in sente.

:
Black has to block, also capturing White's single stone to the right.

:
White defends at the top.

:
Black plays another territory-reducing move in the upper right corner.

///
Instead of defending her territory at the top with above, it does not make sense for White to continue with the mutual reduction of opponent's territories (in the Capture Variation).

White can destroy six points of Black's territory with her moves at ; Black can destroy four points of White's territory with his moves at . Additionally, Black will be able to connect his stone in the lower right, gaining another two points, compared to the superordinate variation.

Seen overall, the net effect is zero.

///
Black has four open spots to defend (); White has three (), but it's Black's turn.
Black will be unable to connect , as in the superordinate variation.

:
We simplify the presentation by choosing a "peaceful" continuation.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black destroyed an additional two points of White's territory in the upper right.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the lower left corner.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White captured two Black stones more in the upper right, so gaining two points.
  • Black captured two White stones more in the lower left corner, so gaining three points.

In total, White lost one point.

Jigo => Black + 1
