In principle, Black is able to secure a second eye for his top right group by capturing two White stones with , and . There is no way for White to prevent this. 18 and 19 are miai. If White plays at , to save her two stones on the left, Black captures White's four stones below with a move at .

:
With this move, White captures Black's groups in the lower right corner.

:
Black tries his best in the corner, but ...

:
... White is one step ahead, and wins the semeai.

Even if Black plays , he does not gain () as much as he loses () in the lower right. White wins the game with ease. This development makes clear that, even in the "old days", one thing must have been evident: It cannot be Black's main task in this problem simply to provide his top right group with two eyes.

:
In the top right alone, Black cannot get two eyes, even if he moves first.

Black can secure an eye in gote, either starting at , or at . These two areas are miai, so White cannot prevent a Black eye here, even if she moves first. Thereafter, Black can reduce White's corner territory, but White will not allow him to make another eye.
