White connects her two stones in the lower left.

:
White lost two tempi in the Main Semeai by her last move, so Black is free to push at the top in sente.

:
Thereafter, Black reduces White's potential territory in the guzumi area by this push.

Alternatively, he might consider starting with . This push at the edge will usually result in a change in the order of moves.

:
White blocks.

She could simplify the issue by connecting at immediately.

:
Black's push is also an atari.

:
White blocks again, creating a ko shape.

Again, she could simplify the issue by connecting at just now.

In order to simplify the presentation, we let Black continue with the Main Semeai here.

Alternatively, Black could start the ko in the upper right with capturing at .

:
In order to simplify the presentation, we let White connect the ko here.

White does not have any chance to win this ko (i.e. to leave it open), because Black can use his liberty-occupying moves at the left as ko threats, as long as the borders of White's territory at the right are not entirely closed.
As a result of Black's manoeuvre in this area, Black destroyed three points of White's potential territory (in the Capture Variation) at the cost of only one tempo in the Main Semeai. This means that the net gain is two points.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

Black plays 1/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the top.
  • Black destroyed an additional four points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.

In total, White lost one point.

Black + 1 => Black + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the top.
  • Black destroyed an additional three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured three more Black stones in the upper right corner, so gaining five points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost one point.

Black + 4 => Black + 5
