White defends her territory in the guzumi area, also occupying one of Black's liberties at the right.

Black enhances his position in the upper left in return.

White plays the wedge in the left centre.

This is KataGo's bad-shape move in the left centre.

In principle, White lost one tempo in the Main Semeai by her previous move, so Black is able to push at the top.

Thereafter, Black plays KataGo's solid connection.

The Main Semeai continues.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point White will connect at at the upper edge.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner and at the top is four points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 4 => White + 4

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner and at the top is four points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.
  • Black captured one White stone more at the left, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost two points.
