Here, however, it would be much better for Black to give atari at , instead, capturing White's pivotal stone.

Please note that Black will play at in the right centre in the Capture Variation only.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the top is one point.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the centre.

In total, White gained two points.

White + 4 => White + 6

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the top is one point.

In total, White gained three points.
