Please note that White does not cut at , instead, to not strengthen Black unnecessarily.

Black will not suffer severe damage in the corner, so starting White's manoeuvre by pushing with at the left edge brings no benefit whatsoever.

Black connects solidly on the inside, leaving no cutting point for White to exploit.

Solidly connecting at , instead, would be a grave mistake.

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upoer right corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is one point.
  • At the top, one point of White's territory changed place, so the net effect is zero.
  • White captured one Black stone more in the upper right corner, so gaining one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • Black captured one White stone less at the left edge, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
