White answers Black's guzumi immediately.

The 2019 update of our website showed the new moves that were found by KataGo (2019), but had no subvariations for Yamada Shinji's tsuke and KataGo's crosscut. We will use this 2021 update to make up for what was missed at that time.

For this purpose, please understand the Guzumi exchange at the right played before the tsuke of Yamada Shinji in the upper left.

A detailed discussion of Yamada Shinji's tsuke in the classical line of play, i.e. without Guzumi Exchange, can be found much earlier ( 222bb).

: (A 222gi ; B 222gm)
With his corner still being open at the left edge, it is best for Black to patiently defend at the top. The sagari to is a solid way to play.

Alternatively, Black might consider playing hane with .

However, he must not become too greedy by cutting at , instead.
Please note that this move leads to the aforementioned analysis of Yamada Shinji's tsuke.

:
White starts the engame in the lower left corner "early"

: (D 222ih ; E 222ij)
Black simply connects.

Trying to strengthen his upper left corner with the diagonal move at would be a mistake here.
Black is unable to erase all the weaknesses in this corner with only one move. He could compensate for only one point of the two points loss at the bottom.

Choosing the solid connection of , instead, would be even worse for him.

:
White attacks Black's upper left corner.

She could also change the order of moves, and play the push at first.

:
White connects her single stone in the right centre.

:
Black starts the remaing endgame at the upper edge.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is two points.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
