White peeps at the upper edge "early".

Please note that this move was never favoured by KataGo (2020), independent of the (reverse) komi. But it is much better than e.g. or .

It is best for Black to close his upper left corner by descending to .

Alternatively, he could also start with Michael Redmond's kikashi in the bamboo joint at , which will result in a principle chance in the order of moves.

Answering White's peep by immediately connecting at , instead, is a mistake here.
The same is true for the push at at the top.

Black must not play any reduction.

:
White might want to start the endgame at the left side after her decision point, to not give Black any chances.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is 13 points.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner and at the top is 16 points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black captured White's two stones in the lower left, so gaining four points.
  • White captured both of Black's hasami-tsuke stones, so gaining eight points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the right is six points.

In total, White gained nine points.

White + 3 => White + 12
