Inserting the kikashi of Michael Redmond in the bamboo joint at , instead, would lose one point overall (White would answer with the atari at ).

Black must not play any reduction.

In the Capture Variation, White will use her sente after the dissolving of the hanezeki to hane at , and to connect at thereafter. Black will be able to play at .

White will start the Semeai Variation with the hane of at the upper edge, but Black will not play at in the centre, unnecessarily providing White with an additional prisoner.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super³ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left is two points.
  • White did not capture one Black stone at the lower edge, so losing two points.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the centre.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 2 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super³ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is two points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left is two points.
  • White did not capture one Black stone at the lower edge, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone at the left, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 3 => Black + 3
