However, she must not let Black occupy the point of . White would gain one point overall, if she played the wedge in the left centre at , instead.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will hane at , and connect at later. Black must connect at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White did not get one point of territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not get two points of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured Black's single stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.
  • White captured two Black stones less in the upper right corner, so losing four points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 7 => White + 5

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured Black's single stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.
  • White captured an additional two Black stones in the upper right corner, so gaining four points.

In total, White gained seven points.
