Black defends his territory in the left centre.

:
It is best for White now to connect her two stones in the lower left.

Continuing with the Main Semeai, e.g. with a move at , would be mistaken. The approach would revert to the superordinate variation, losing one point overall.

:
White lost two tempi in the Main Semeai by her previous move, so Black is able to play the large descent at the upper edge.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Blocking at , instead, would become a lost move, causing a loss of one point overall.

:
Black takes profit outside the Main Semeai area for another time.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point White will block at at the upper edge.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 7 => White + 8

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
