Black defends his territory in the lower left corner.

: ( A 222kn)
Giving atari at Black's hasami-tsuke stone was our first idea here, as a matter of course without the helping hand of coloured edges of the board present.

We found later that White was much too kind here. She has to peep at , instead, punishing Black for his mistaken descent in the lower left corner.

:
Once Black descended to the left edge, White is able to connect her single stone in the upper left corner in sente, as Black has to defend against White's throw-in .

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will hane at , and connect at thereafter. Black has to connect at .

In the Capture Variation, White will be unable to occupy both points , and .
In the Semeai Variation, Black will not add a stone at that will become captured anyway.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the upper edge, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 6 => White + 6

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured one Black stone less at the upper edge, so losing two points.

In total, Black gained four points.

Jigo => Black + 4
