: ( 222aa)
White occupies the guzumi point.

This move puts Black close to the chain of the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, largely spoiling Black's options.

: (A 222kc 107 222kk ; B 222km)
Black occupies a White liberty at the left, so continuing with the Main Semeai.

Inserting Michael Redmond's kikashi in the bamboo joint aims at providing Black with an additional tempo in the Main Semeai, but nevertheless would be a mistake here, losing one point overall.

Immobilising White's single stone in the upper left corner with , or defending his lower left corner with the descent to , however, would result in a disaster for Black. These moves must not be played without a preceeding kikashi in the upper right corner.

:
Once Black descended to the left edge, White is able to connect her single stone in the upper left corner in sente.
Black must defend against her throw-in at .

:
White peeps at the upper edge.

:
Black is still bound to the Main Semeai, and will remain unable to connect the hasami-tsuke stone.

Black must not tenuki here, e.g. in order to occupy the large endgame move of .
White would cut at , saving both her moves and . This means that Black would fall prey to the Punishment Semeai.

: (A 222kp)
White continues with the Main Semeai.

White might want to stop Black from defending his territory in the left centre by playing at herself, choosing the wedge at in the centre as a preration, instead.
However, as it will turn out, there is no way for White to benefit from this alternative approach.

:
White does not connect her two stones in the lower left, so keeping Black par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

:
The Main Semeai continues, as usual.

...

:
White plays the endgame at the left side "early".

:
It benefits White in the Semeai Variation to gain points outside the Main Semeai area.
Before the end of the game, Black will have to connect at , White will connect at .

In the Capture Variation, Black will answer with , destroying one point of White's territory in the centre..
In the Semeai Variation, Black will not add an additional stone there to his group that will become captured anyway.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is five points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left is two points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone at the lower edge, so losing two points.
  • White did not get one point of territory in the centre.

In total, White gained four points.

White + 2 => White + 6

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is five points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left is two points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone at the lower edge, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the left centre, so gaining two points.
