Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured Black's stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.
  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 6 => White + 6

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured Black's stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.
  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured an additional two Black stones in the upper right, so gaining four points.

In total, White gained three points.
