If she continued with the Main Semeai, instead, Black would play at and White would lose four points in the Semeai Variation.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is five points.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 4 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is five points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost six points.

White + 4 => Black + 2
