Black descends to the upper edge.

In order to simplify the presentation, we will occupy White's upper liberties first.

White gives atari at Black's stones above.

White establishes some points of territory in the centre.

White's previous move lost one tempo in the Main Semeai, so Black is able to push at the upper edge.

Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • White got an additional two points of territory there.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 3 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • White got an additional two points of territory there.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
