White plays the solid connection.

Sooner or later, Black descends to the left edge.

White connects her five stones in sente, threatening to throw-in at .

Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

White continues with occupying Black's liberties in the upper right, keeping him par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

White starts the endgame at the left side "early".

She might also wait until after her decision point.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will hane at at the upper edge, forcing Black to connect at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super³ordinate variation ...

  • White did not destroy two points of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured Black's hasami-tsuke stone, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super³ordinate variation ...

  • White did not destroy two points of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • Black captured one White stone less at the left edge, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
