White cuts at the upper edge, capturing some of Black's stones.

Black must not capture White's five stones in the upper left, instead, as he would fall prey to the Punishment Semeai thereafter.

Please note that White will have to capture the hanezeki's tail at a moment, when her five-point nakade is filled with only three Black stones.
Otherwise, Black would connect the tail, and win the semeai with White's left-hand group.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated loss in the upper left corner is two points.
  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory at the top, and in the centre.
  • White's cumulated gain in the upper right corner is seven points.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper right is six points.
  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the hanezeki.
  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • White lost one point in the nakade.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.

In total, White lost two points.
