Black will not benefit from cutting aggressively with this move.

:
Giving atari with a move at would in principle return to the higher-level sub-variation, so Black tries the atari from below.

If Black played at , instead, White would answer at , resulting in a change in the order of moves to the sequence used here.

A move at , instead, will lead to a larger eye for White, after her reply at .

It does not help Black to play on the upper edge, instead.

:
Black is in a dilemma now. His group has eight effective liberties only, so he cannot occupy a shared liberty with a move at - White would capture the hanezeki's tail with a move at , and win the Punishment Semeai.

Neither is he able to connect the hanezeki's tail with a move at himself, because White's centre group has seven liberties left - White would win the semeai with Black's connected group on the lower edge.

Even capturing at , and connecting thereafter, will not provide any help to Black. White's centre group will still have six liberties left, enough to win outright.

White wins unconditionally.
