  • Black's cumulated gain at the lower edge is five points (three points of territory, one non-captured stone).
  • Black gained three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's wedging stone in the left centre, for a loss of one point.
  • Black did not capture White's single stone at the top right, for a loss of two points.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the upper left corner is six points.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the lower edge is five points (three points of territory, one non-captured stone).
  • Black gained three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's wedging stone in the left centre, for a loss of one point.
  • Black did not capture White's bad-shape stone, for a loss of two points.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the upper left corner is six points.
  • White lost one point of territory in the upper right centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
